The IBM XIV Storage System is a disk storage server. The system is a collection of modules, each of which is an independent computer with its own memory, interconnections, disk drives, and other subcomponents, laid out in a grid and connected together in parallel using either InfiniBand (third generation systems) or Ethernet (second generation systems) connections. Each module has an x86 CPU and runs a software platform consisting largely of a modified Linux kernel and other open source software.[citation needed]
Traditional storage systems distribute a volume across a subset of disk drives in a clustered fashion. The XIV storage system distributes volumes across all modules in 1 MiB chunks (partitions) so that all of the modules' resources are used evenly. For robustness, each logical partition is stored in at least two copies on separate modules, so that if a part of a disk drive, an entire disk drive, or an entire module fails, the data is still available.

One can increase the system storage capacity by adding additional modules. When one adds a module, the system automatically redistributes previously stored data to make optimal use of its I/O capacity. Depending on the model and disk type chosen when the machine is ordered, one system can be configured for storage capacity from 27 TB to 324 TB.[1]
The XIV software features include remote mirroring, thin provisioning, quality of service controls, LDAP authentication support, VMware support, differential, writable snapshots, online volume migration between two XIV systems and encryption protecting data at rest. [2]
The IBM XIV management GUI is a software package that can be installed on operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS.[3]An XIV Mobile Dashboard available for the Apple iPad and iPhone through the Apple App Store.[4]

The IBM XIV Storage System was developed in 2002 by an Israeli start-up company funded and headed by engineer and businessman Moshe Yanai. They delivered their first system to a customer in 2005. Their product was called Nextra.
In December 2007,[5] the IBM Corporation acquired XIV, renaming the product the IBM XIV Storage System. The first IBM version of the product was launched publicly on September 8, 2008. Unofficially within IBM this product is called Generation 2 of the XIV.
The differences between Gen1 and Gen2 were not architectural, they were mainly physical. New disks were introduced, new controllers, new interconnects, improved management, additional software functions.[6]
In September 2011, IBM announced larger disk drives, changing the inter-connectivity layer to use InfiniBand rather than Ethernet.
In 2012-2013 IBM added the support of SSD devices and 10GbE host connectivity.

Abstract |
The IBM 2810 XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 114 for machine types 2810and 2812 is an innovative, high-end, open disk system designed to helpreduce costs, simplify management and speed access to important data.IBM XIV Storage System Model 114 for machine types 2810 and 2812 is nowoffering the 3 Terabyte (TB) Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drivespopulated in the XIV interface and data modules.
IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with software release 11.1 now includessupport for optional IBM XIV SSD Caching. This new feature is designedto provide a performance boost for Gen3 systems with more cache capacitythan existing DIMM RAM and the ability to serve up to 3x the performancefor OLTP workloads. With SSD caching, Gen3 with software release 11.1further strengthens its ability to provide consistent high performanceand enterprise functionality, along with low total cost of ownership(TCO) and ease of use. The enhancements in this release is intended toenable:
- A virtualized grid-based array of storage devices
- Up to 180 2 TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives

The IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 represents the third generation of theIBM XIV series of storage systems and offers: - Ease of management: Ease of management that goes below thesurface, with a virtualized architecture, highly intuitive GUI, andclever implementation of role-based management all add up to create astreamlined user experience, with less administration.

This optional feature ensures the maximum shipping weight of themachine does not exceed 1018 kg(2239.5 lb) during the initial shipment. This feature is ordered forinstallations where receiving a full sized assembled storage unit wouldbe impractical. The unit would be delivered fully tested but partiallydisassembled into several easily transported subassemblies. This featurewould allow racks to be safely transported on lower weight capacityelevators. At the installation site, the unit will be assembled andinstalled by IBM technicians. This feature will increase the machineinstallation time and should only be ordered if required when the machinehas 12 modules or more. This feature allows the removal of the topmodules (#12-15), then the top hat of the rack can be taken off to ensurethe height of the machine is reduced by 68 cm (15 in), so themachine is shorter and can fit into doors.
